Joshu Alone and Honored

A monk asked Joshu, “The Far-reaching Way is without difficulty, only rejecting picking and choosing. So what doesn’t pick and choose?”

Joshu said, “Above the heavens, below the heavens, only I, alone and honored.”

The monk said, “This is tantamount to picking and choosing.”

Joshu said, “You field-and-village slave, where is picking and choosing?”

The monk was speechless.

Jul 6 – 12

“The Master said, “You can’t seem to stop your mind from racing around everywhere seeking something. That’s why the patriarch said, ‘Hopeless fellows–using their heads to look for their heads!’ You must right now turn your light around and shine it on yourselves, not go seeking somewhere else. Then you will understand that in body and mind you are no different from the patriarchs and the buddhas, and that there is nothing to do. Do that and you may speak of’getting the Dharma.’”

Joshu’s Stone Bridge

A Monk asked Joshu, “For a long time, I’ve heard the report of Joshu’s stone elevated-bridge. I’ve arrived only to see a rough bridge.”

Joshu said, “You only see the rough bridge. For the time being you do not see the stone elevated-bridge.”

The monk said, “So what is the stone elevated-bridge?”

Joshu said, “It ferries across donkeys; it ferries across horses, the bridge.”
